Andre Berto and Floyd Mayweather will be in the ring together on September 12. The fight will be Floyd's 49th and the last one at that, according to his team. The fight's main selling point is that both Floyd and Berto have been welterweight champions before. During the conference in Los Angeles, both men expressed respect for each other while speaking softly the whole time. None of them threw a verbal jab at the other. In fact Berto's trainer was the only one who executed what could be referred as a verbal feint by criticizing the media for categorizing the fight as a non event.

During the press conference that was supposed to talk about the coming fight, most of the time was spent by fighter and promoters deflecting criticism on who was to blame for the over publicizing Manny Pacquiao. The fight with Pacquiao ended up as a record breaker in terms of the money that was made and the complaints from fans about non action from the match. Their line of defense was that nobody forced anyone to buy the tickets. The under card fighters also got a chance to express their thoughts as well. The under card fighters line is set with a rematch between Rocky Martinez and Orlando Salido, a fight between Badou Jack and George Groves and Ishe Smith vs Vanes Martinez.

The outspoken Floyd has been criticized for choosing as an opponent for his 49th fight. Most critics are saying he should have chosen to fight it out with the more dangerous opponent Amir Khan. Most critics see his choice of Berto was to make it easy for him to create and cement his 49 victory in the history books. If he does that, he will have equaled Rocky Marciano's legendary unbeaten record of 49-0. On his side, he has insisted that his fight with Berto has a box office appeal. He also added that both men, Berto and Khan have won two championships each. He concluded that they are skillfully equal in many ways. Critics have however maintained the fight would have been more entertaining if he had chosen Khan as an opponent.

It was interesting that Berto's trainer spent more time at the Podium lavishing Mayweather than his own player Mr. Berto. Raising questions on why he did that. About his dismally entertaining fight with Pacquiao, Mayweather said he is in it for business, a chess player if you will. He went there to find a way to win and he did. That is all there is to him when it comes to these fights. There is only one consolation for the fight between Berto and Mayweather. That is, maybe Berto has what it takes to be the one controlling the fight. If he pulls such a move, then he will also have set a record as the one who took Mayweather’s name from the books of history. Otherwise all else looks like Mayweather is headed for the history record books using skill, talent and scheming, against the wishes of his critics. Boxing - Signup Now
